When sending or expecting money from abroad to a UK bank account, just giving the regular account number won’t do. You’ll usually need to provide more details, like an IBAN or Cross-border code, to ensure the money gets to the right place quickly and safely. So, how to get UK IBAN?

Read on to learn more about the UK IBAN and how to get one for your personal and business needs.

What is an IBAN, and why is it so important?

An International Bank Account Number (IBAN) is a standardised international numbering system developed to identify international bank accounts. Let’s explore the IBAN role in cross-border payments further.

Purpose and importance

  • Identifying overseas bank accounts. IBANs are used to uniquely identify individual bank accounts involved in international transactions. When you send money across borders, the recipient’s IBAN helps locate their specific account.
  • Additional information. An IBAN does not replace a bank’s own account numbering system. Instead, it provides supplementary information that aids in identifying overseas payments.
  • Verification. Also, the IBAN can be used to verify that transaction details are accurate.
  • Simplifying transactions. Originally developed by European banks, the IBAN system simplifies transactions involving bank accounts from different countries.

Banks use account details to create an IBAN, a single string of characters. This lets you calculate an IBAN using the account information provided.

The IBAN consists of the following components:

  1. Country code. A two-letter ISO (International Organization for Standardization) code representing the country.
  2. Check digits. Provided by the issuing financial institution.
  3. Bank identifier. A code identifying the financial institution (and sometimes the specific branch).
  4. BBAN. The basic bank account number specific to an individual account in a particular country.

Where can I see my UK IBAN?

To find your IBAN, you can use one of the following methods:

1. Check your bank statements

Your IBAN is usually printed on your bank statements. Look for a section that includes your account details. You’ll likely find the IBAN listed there.

2. Use online banking

Log in to your online banking account. Navigate to your account details or profile settings. You should find your IBAN listed there.

3. Contact your bank

If you can’t find your IBAN through the above methods, reach out to your bank’s customer service. They can provide you with your IBAN over the phone or via email.

Remember that the IBAN is essential for international transactions, so keep it handy when dealing with cross-border payments!

How is the UK IBAN different from others?

Banks and EMIs provide their users with local IBAN to help with international transfers.

The United Kingdom (UK) IBAN follows the same basic structure as other IBANs, but there are some specific differences:

Country code

The UK’s country code is “GB” (for Great Britain), which is used as the initial two letters of the IBAN.

Length

The UK IBAN is typically 22 characters long, including both letters and digits.

Format

The first two characters are the country code (GB).

The next two digits represent a check digit calculated using a specific algorithm to verify the accuracy of the IBAN. The remaining characters form the basic bank account number (BBAN), which includes the bank identifier and the individual account number.

Sort Code and Account Number

The BBAN part of the UK IBAN consists of the sort code (6 digits) and the account number (8 digits). The sort code identifies the bank and branch, while the account number uniquely identifies the individual account.

UK IBAN Example

Suppose you have an account with sort code 12-34-56 and account number 78901234.

The UK IBAN would be GB12 1234 5678 9012 34.

How and where can you get a UK IBAN?

Here’s how you can get a UK IBAN:

1. Open a UK bank account

You first need to open a bank account with a financial institution in the UK. You can do this by visiting a local bank branch or applying online through the bank’s website.

2. Provide necessary documentation

Banks typically require various documents to create an account. These include proof of identity (such as a passport or driver’s license) and proof of address (such as a utility bill or rental agreement).

3. Receive your IBAN

Once your bank account is opened and activated, the bank will provide you with your IBAN along with other account details. You may find your IBAN on your bank statements, online banking portal, or through communication from your bank.

Once you have your IBAN, you can use it to receive payments from other countries or to make international transactions. Make sure to provide your IBAN accurately to ensure smooth transactions.

Remember that each bank may have its specific procedures for opening accounts and obtaining IBANs, so it’s best to directly contact the bank you’re interested in opening an account with for precise instructions and requirements.

Taking a Shortcut with PayDo

However, you don’t necessarily need to open a UK bank account to obtain the local IBAN. This is where PayDo comes into play.

The verification process takes up to 7 minutes.

To create a business account, you will need to provide additional information about your company and shareholders. The verification process takes up to 5 business days.

After successful verification, you will receive an email or notification that your account is active.

Now your account is approved, and you can apply for a UK IBAN in the Account Details section. This unique code will allow you to make international transactions smoothly.
